Neck Stock Buckle- Boston, MA
Stock buckles were an English clothing trend during the 18th century. The “stock” or neck scarf wrapped around the collar and while the “buckle” secured it in the back. Above is a partial fragment of the full buckle, specifically the nail-head studs.
The number of nail-head studs determine the height of the collar. Three stud stock buckles attached to small collars popular during the mid to late 18th century, while four studs accommodated wider collars from the late 18th century to early 19th century. Based the number of nail-heads seen above, this stock buckle may be related to Britain’s occupancy of Boston around the same time.
