Between 1539-1542, Hernando de Soto lead an expedition from Florida through Georgia, The Carolinas, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. When he arrived in Parkin, Arkansas, historical records show communication between community chief, Casqui and the Spaniards during their stay. This single chevron bead is proof of their interaction.

Spanish Conquistadors carried glass beads to trade with indigenous leaders. Chevron beads were originally produced during the 15th and 17th century. Production first began in Venice and Murano, Italy, then moved to the Netherlands towards the end of the 16th century.
